CANCELED Halloween 2020:
October 31st at the
Winchester Farmers Market

It's still snowing Friday afternoon, not warming, and the frost and snow is expected to stick to the grass all day Sat. Look to next year!

The last Winchester Farmers Market https://www.winchesterfarmersmarket.org/ of the season is October 31st, at the parking lot between Town Hall and the Jenks Center.  Park at the Jenks Center (enter via Skillings Rd, NOT BY Mt Vernon St).  We are playing 10am to noon, but don't feel obligated to stay the entire time if you have other commitments: come by and play what you want.  If you have an amp let me know ahead of time so I can help you get set up before 10am.

Virus!

Most of these are free to join (some encourage using the tip jar) - there are about 25 different groups that are running most days of the week, so find one that fits your schedule and mood, and what you want to play. The list is updated weekly, so bookmark it and check in periodically:

https://www.ukulelemag.com/stories/news/livestream-ukulele-online-events-calendar

Given that there are so many online sessions already out there I am going to conserve my energy and try to do small local playalongs...

August 1st, Sat - at Norma's from the sidewalk

10am we will play some songs for Norma from the sidewalk. Camille will keep things under control from the porch. Near the corner of Playstead and Main St in West Medford. Let me know if you can make it (shukong@gmail.com) and I'll send the address separately -- we will use the RAoM songbook from below.

July 5th, Sunday 3-5pm

Weather permitting: Socially Distanced Playalong on my patio.  Wear a mask please. I'll put chairs out at least six feet apart. Park at high school lot or Holland Street. If you need to use my driveway let me know (entry on Spruce ).  Use the songbook below.

MVH June 11th 2020

Next:  Thursday June 11th, 2020 at MVH - the song book is ready if you want to play along.  Even better let me know if you want to play at a safely socially distanced location. We have many opportunities now that the weather is better.

See "We'll Meet Again" below for an example...

How to participate:
1) play one of the videos (write down which one) with headphones on.
2) record your voice/ instrument on a separate phone/tablet/ camera
3) send it to me and I'll try to edit them together - the more contributors the better. [transfernow or wetransfer can send larger video files from your phone or tablet]
NOTE:
a) shoot in landscape (wider than taller)
b) keep camera at or near eye level (don't look up or down at it)
c) center yourself in the picture

Looking for additional tracks for this one!
The first clip to the right is a baseline, the next with an additional voice; looking for more instruments and voices!

Be a part of the show!
Record yourself playing with Clarence. The song is in C (which we already know). See details at right. Playalong starts at 1:04:5 -use this link to start at that time:     youtu.be/MYwW_HPGxGA?t=3844

from the notes in YT page:
VIRTUAL SONG AROUND THE WOLD GUIDELINES: During Clarence's performance of "Stand By Me," he will leave a verse and chorus open for you to sing, rap, play your instrument and/or dance. Please film yourself performing (using the best video/audio possible) and email it to us at participate@playingforchange.com by Saturday, April 4th at 11:59pm PT for your chance to be in a special video.

A few notes:
- Film yourself horizontally (landscape)
- Make sure you're in a well-lit room
- We suggest using a separate device such as a computer/iPad with headphones to listen to Clarence and using your phone to record yourself so that we only hear your audio
- Submit your final video to participate@playingforchange.com with the subject line "SBM - Virtual Song Around The World" and include your name and location in the body of the email - Remember, the better the quality you send us, the more likely we can use it
- HAVE FUN!!!

If you have a piano (or keyboard) and a disinfecting wipe, youj can play this!

Start from the low keys, and wipe right to the top, and back down again.

Thanks to Susan for sharing this.

Happy Holidays to All You Strummers and Singers Out There

December 21, Wednesday 6pm we will sing happy 102nd birthday to Stella.

Picture
If you don't already have the location send me an email at hello@shukulele.com - we have sung happy birthday since she was a young 99.   The PDF to the left shows you how to play Happy Birthday in many keys.  There are three chords, and depending on the range of your singers, you should adapt and play along.  If you can remember the C-G7-F and G-D7-C combinations, you should be all set for almost any audience and celebration.

December 13, 20, 27 2013 -- Fridays
at Jenks Senior Center –sign up at front desk at the Center. The Jenks will offer a pilot program of ukulele lessons taught by a local resident on Fridays, December 13, 20, and 27 from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m.  The ukulele is easy to learn and it is a very “accessible” instrument, with a large portion of popular music based on learning four basic chords.  Look at the following video online to see an example of the four chords making up many popular songs:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pidokakU4I .

There will be no charge for these classes and the instructors will bring extra ukuleles to the first class for people to try and see which instrument size and type is right for them.  So come join us to play and sing, learn something new while having fun.

Check out the following videos online to see a performance of the local ukulele players at the Winchester Farmer’s Market in July and October:   Fourth of July patriotic sing along and October tribute to John Lennon.
